The OCI-1000 handheld hyperspectral imager from BaySpec Inc. provides full, continuous visible and near-IR data for sensing applications including real-time identification of food-borne illnesses during agricultural processing, noninvasive point-of-care medical diagnostics, and wider deployment of miniaturized drones or unmanned aerial vehicles for crop or emergency rescue efforts.

The compact device, which weighs less than 0.5 lb (227 g), provides high resolution and sensitivity even in low-light conditions; this capability is integrated at the chip level. It has an onboard computer and a battery-operated, LED-backlit display. Various objective lenses are available for wide-angle to close-up views.

The OCI-1000 has been nominated for a 2014 Prism Award in the Detectors, Sensing, Imaging, and Cameras category. The Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation is an annual competition recognizing new products and inventions that break with conventional ideas, solve problems and improve life and is sponsored by SPIE and Photonics Media.
