SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 18, 2014 — HighLight 10,000D, a direct-diode laser system from Coherent Inc., delivers higher power, enabling increased throughput for applications in metal cladding and heat treating.

The device outputs 10 kW (at 975 nm) and can be configured to deliver interchangeable beam shapes ranging from 1 to 12 mm and lengths from 6 to 36 mm. When combined with the company’s pressurized or gravity feed powder nozzles and systems, the increased power level enables higher-deposition-rate cladding (>20 lb/h), or the use of larger spot sizes for heat treating.

The process of subjecting glass to temperature cycling to produce physico-chemical reactions that alter its properties. Similar processes can be accomplished with a laser -- most commonly a CO2, Nd:YAG or Nd:glass laser -- in certain kinds of metalworking including surface hardening, cladding, alloying and glazing (skin melting).
