The new 4D InSpec™ Surface Gauge is the first handheld, precision instrument for measuring machined surface defects and features directly on components. The 4D InSpec’s combination of portability, affordability, micrometer-level resolution and ease-of-use makes high resolution measurement available for the factory floor, in machine shops and in deployed environments. The 4D InSpec measures surface features from 0.1 to 100 mils deep. Locate and quantify defects such pits, scratches, bumps, corrosion and dents. You can also verify edge break, dot peen and laser scribing depth, and other part features. The 4D InSpec gauge is designed to measure difficult to access areas such as tight corners or large surfaces. A “fold mirror” accessory lets the system function like a borescope to access features without line of sight. The gauge may be mounted in a workstation to provide highly-repeatable quality control measurements. It can also be mounted on a robotic manipulator for fully automated measurements of complex components. The 4D InSpec offers far superior accuracy and repeatability to visual comparison and replication methods, helping inspectors correctly identify critical defects and avoid costly rejection of parts that meet spec. Unlike “microscope stand” style metrology systems its portable design, one-button operation and immunity to vibration make it extremely effective for in situ measurement on large components. The 4D InSpec is rugged and lightweight, with a single cable tether and touchscreen interface to withstand the rigors of daily use in the field or on the factory floor. the included 4D InSpec software automatically finds critical features and calculates height, volume, area, slopes and location. Report generation with 2D traces, 3D plots and statistics is extremely fast. Data transfer to quality control systems is simple and straightforward.
