LONG-HAUL LASER

Hewlett-Packard Co. has introduced a low-cost OC-48 laser for long-haul applications. The Model LSC2500 is a directly modulated, distributed-feedback cooled laser source that operates in the 1500-nm waveband at speeds of 2.488 Gb/s. Housed in a hermetic 14-pin butterfly package, it has an operating temperature range from 220 to +65 °C and can transmit at distances >200 km over a single-mode fiber. Included are a photodiode for monitoring laser output, a thermistor for monitoring laser heat sink temperature and a Peltier-effect TE cooler.
