Cameras have become a significant component in a multitude of medical applications, especially in the fields of microscopy, ophthalmology, pathology, endoscopy, lab automation and biomedical research. This Basler White Paper will explain what makes Machine Vision cameras particularly suitable for use in medicine and the life sciences. The authors Peter Behringer and Denis Dettmer, both Product Managers at Basler, will describe which key criteria should be considered when selecting the ‘right’ camera for a medical application – a task that has become increasingly difficult given the vast range of sensors and interfaces available for operators to choose from. As color fidelity is an absolute must in many medical diagnostic fields, the authors will put particular emphasis on the topics of color calculation, calibration, gamma correction, and practical color calibration, as well as on the concept and the critical importance of color fidelity in medical diagnostics and research. Furthermore, they will take a deep look into the role the sensor technology plays in camera-related medical applications and provide comprehensive information about the different designs and read-out behaviors of CCD and CMOS sensors. Finally, they will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both sensor types and the trend toward CMOS sensor technology for use in medical and life science-related applications.
