3-D Displays in SID Lineup
Three-dimensional display technologies -- including Hollywood's use of stereoscopic 3-D in big-budget feature films -- is on the bill of topics at Display Week 2008: The Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition, to be held May 18-23 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Topics of speakers at the display-industry forum, in its 46th year, will also include the continued growth of mobile display applications and "where TV is really going."
“The lineup of this year’s Display Week is extremely exciting,” said Display Week’s general chair, Amal Ghosh. “With a record number of high-caliber submissions and top presenters, the 2008 program will be unparalleled to those of years past. Moreover, we will be hosting a number of events that will delve into today’s latest display trends.
The symposium at Display Week 2008 will kick off on May 20 with keynotes by Paul (Shuang-Lang) Peng, senior vice president and general manager, Information Technology Display Business Group, AU Optronics Corp.; Yoshito Shiraishi, general manager, E-Products and Business Development Department, TV Business Group, Sony Corp.; and Mary Lou Jepsen, founder, Pixel Qi. They will speak about, respectively, green products and their introduction into the TFT-LCD industry; the challenges of being the first OLED TV manufacturer and the role of displays in ultralow-cost computer designs for the world’s underprivileged.
It will also include a record 73 sessions of invited and contributed papers featuring 272 oral presentations and 238 poster presentations addressing topics such as plasma, OLEDs, electronic paper (e-paper), active matrix liquid-crystal display (AMLCDs), projection to microdisplays and 3-D displays.
The four-day conference will cover technology including AMLCDs; applied vision and human factors; display applications. electronics, manufacturing, measurement and systems; emissive displays; field-emission displays; liquid-crystal technology; organic LEDs; and projection displays.
SID’s annual business conference, on May 19 20, will feature senior executives from leading display organizations. The returning investor conference will be held on May 20 and 21. Co-sponsored by securities and investment banking firm Cowen & Co. LLC, it will feature presentations from leading public and private display companies, intended to appeal primarily to securities analysts, portfolio managers, investors, M&A specialists and display company executives.
A panel discussion on May 20, "AMLCD World Domination: Does Anything Stand in the Way?” by industry experts AMLCD, plasma, OLED and projection technologies will focus on the proliferation of each, given that AMLCD’s market share is expected to mimic that of cathode ray tubes (CRTs) -- which dominated the high-information-content display industry with a 99-percent market share for 60 years, SID said.
Also new will be an afternoon of invited presentations on technologies involved in the resurgence of the 3-D film industry in content creation (animation and live action), editing, post-production and stereoscopic theater display. The 3D Cinema Session will kick off with a luncheon keynote address by Andy Hendrickson, vice president of technology for Walt Disney Animation Studios, who will discuss the evolution of display technology and challenges and opportunities specific to the entertainment industry.
Avnet Inc. will co-sponsor a Display Applications Special Session on May 22 on how to select an appropriate display for a product, with in-depth analysis of individual display technologies and opportunities to network with leading display innovators.
Also on the program are Sunday Short Courses, four-hour classes covering the fundamentals of information displays; display technology seminars, 12 90-minute seminars on diverse topics related to the information the display field on May 19; and applications tutorials (Wednesday through Friday).
