Shin-Tson Wu to Be Honored For LCD Advances

shintsonwu.jpgShin-Tson Wu, head of the LCD research group within the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida, was chosen to receive the 2008 Jan Rajchman Prize -- the highest honor conferred by the Society for Information Display (SID) -- in recognition of his contributions to LCD science and technology, including display device physics, electro-optic effects and materials. Before joining UCF in 2001, Wu worked at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, Calif., for 18 years. He received a PhD in quantum electronics from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles) and a BS in physics from National Taiwan University. Wu is a Fellow of the IEEE, SID, OSA and SPIE and is the recipient of numerous awards for his work. The founding editor of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Display Technology, he also co-authored "Fundamentals of Liquid Crystal Devices" (Wiley, 2006; with D. K. Yang), "Introduction to Microdisplays" (Wiley, 2006; with D. Armitage and I. Underwood), "Reflective Liquid Crystal Displays" (Wiley, 2001; with D. K. Yang), and "Optics and Nonlinear Optics of Liquid Crystals" (World Scientific, 1993; with I. C. Khoo). Several of his patents have been implemented in display and photonic devices. The award will be presented at the SID 2008 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, to be held May 18-23 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. (2/14/2008)
