LIVE-CELL IMAGING

LIVE-CELL IMAGING Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH has released a dedicated live-cell imaging system that collects up to 120 confocal images per second at a resolution of 512 X 512 pixels. The LSM 5 Live confocal microscope can attain 505 or 1010 fps at reduced resolutions of 512 X 100 or 512 X 50 pixels, respectively. Zoom optics and an ultrafast Z-drive permit 3-D image stacks to be acquired every second. A complex beam shaper converts the collimated Gaussian beam into laser light with a rectangular cross section and focuses it on the color-independent beamsplitter, which the company says provides nearly 100% excitation efficiency and emission yield at all wavelengths. Two individually adjustable confocal apertures enable maximum confocality at all levels.
