An arc lamp source optimized for coupling light into 100- to 1000-µm-core-diameter, multimode optical fibers with SMA connectors has been unveiled by Axometrics Inc. The self-contained FOI-1 illuminator uses enhanced metal arc, DC gas discharge lamp technology and has a color temperature of 6500 K. The company says that the light source has a small arc size and almost twice the luminous efficacy of typical xenon lamps, and produces high output from 350 to 1100 nm. Features include an external slot for holding 1-in.-diameter optical filters, a 200-µm-core multimode fiber optic cable and a focusable collimator assembly. It is supplied with three 10-nm FWHM bandpass filters at user-specified wavelengths.
