Nanoident AG has announced a high-resolution, organic semiconductor-based photonic sensor for high-volume industrial applications. The 256-pixel sensor has 50 X 50-µm-size pixels and achieves 250-dpi resolution. The core elements of the photonic sensor platform are organic photodiodes, photodiode lines or photodiode arrays built on glass or on a thin (30 to 300 nm) and flexible plastic substrate such as PET foil with ultrathin layers of microstructured electrodes and photoactive semiconductors. Other substrates, such as ceramic, silicon and paper, also are possible. The company says that organic semiconductor production is superior to silicon-based methods in terms of cost efficiency and volume. Applications include flexible fingerprint sensors for smart cards and large biochip sensors.
