OmniVision Technologies Inc. has launched its sixth-generation 1.3- megapixel CameraChip sensor. With its 2-μm pixel and 1/5-in. optical format, the OV9660 sensor enables a 25 percent thinner camera module for use in ultraslim camera phones. Measuring 6 × 6 × 4 mm, the module allows drop-in upgrades to 1.3 megapixels in VGA camera phones, extending the lifetime of existing designs, and it enables the upgrade of VGA cameras in ultraportable laptop computers without system redesign. The low-voltage CMOS sensor provides full-frame, subsampled, scaled or windowed 8-/10-bit images in a variety of formats that are controlled through a serial camera bus interface.
