Kyocera Corp. has released a line of LCDs that feature an LED backlighting system instead of conventional cold-cathode fluorescent lamps. The product is designed to meet a variety of industrial display applications, including manufacturing controls, test and measurement equipment, and medical systems. The backlights are available in supertwisted nematic, color supertwisted nematic and thin-film transistor models. LED backlighting offers several benefits, including improved shock and vibration resistance, eliminated or reduced electromagnetic interference, and faster start-up in low temperatures. The systems also are free of lead and mercury.
