The Sapphire 50-mW laser released by Coherent Inc. is a small-footprint OEM all-solid-state instrument that delivers 50 mW of continuous-wave output power at 488 nm. The power level delivers increased sensitivity, resulting in faster throughput and/or higher signal-to-noise ratios for applications such as flow cytometry, drug discovery, genetic screening and confocal microscopy. The laser is based on the same optically pumped semiconductor technology as the 10- and 20-mW versions and also shares the same form factor, power requirements and beam characteristics for easy implementation in next-generation instruments based on the Sapphire standard. The company says that the laser’s advantages include high electrical efficiency, low heat dissipation and a long lifetime.
