Ariel Technologies Inc. has unveiled a laser pump guard that protects fiber-coupled light sources from back-lasing, preventing pump laser burnout. Light passes from the light source through the laser pump guard to the active doped fiber without significantly reducing the power or affecting the pump wavelength and with minimal temperature increases. The guard can be used with up to 10 W of optical power. Multimode splice insertion losses are estimated at 0.3 to 0.4 dB. Pump wavelengths are 790, 915, 940 and 980 nm, and the stop-band wavelengths are ∼1, 1.55 and 2 µm. All wavelength ranges can be adjusted.
