The Boost electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera from Diagnostic Instruments Inc. uses electron-multiplication technology to provide good performance under ultralow light conditions in live-cell microscopy. Part of the Spot line, the device provides temperature-compensated linear gain of up to 1000×, extracting extremely faint signals without an image intensifier. Three base models are available, including front- and back-illuminated units. Featuring selectable image read speeds as well as adjustable gain multiples and vertical clocking, they are suitable for single-molecule detection, live-cell microscopy and Förster resonance energy transfer studies.
