Schott North America Inc. has introduced a multicore glass optical fiber data cable to the US automotive market. The cable can withstand temperatures of up to 125 °C and bending radii as small as 5 mm without appreciable attenuation, enabling high data transfer rates in automotive installations, even inside the engine compartment. With multiple fibers within the cable’s core, safety applications are enhanced because broken single fibers do not interrupt data flow. Suitable for use with CD and DVD players, navigation systems and onboard computers, the fiber also may make possible bumper-installed camera- or radar-based safety systems.
