The 500-kHz Rapid laser manufactured by RPMC Lasers Inc. is a cold-ablation micromachining tool that is available as either a 2- or an 8-W 1-μm instrument. Also available in 532, 355 and 266 nm models, the device ablates material without burrs, microcracks, heat-affected zones or significant recast. Pulse duration is 15 ps, allowing the user to remove as little as 10 nm per pulse. Suitable for use on ceramics, silicon, diamonds, sapphire and metals, it offers high repetition rates, direct diode pumping, and compact and reliable hardware that can be installed quickly.
