Nuvonyx Inc. has introduced a high-performance fiber-coupled diode laser system with <1.7 kW from a 400-μm-diameter fiber with a numerical aperture of 0.22. Its optical power density of >1 MW/cm² is, according to the company, an order of magnitude higher than that of other systems operating at a single wavelength. Higher power levels can be achieved from the same size fiber via wavelength-combining techniques. Development of the system was supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory as a dual-use science and technology project.
