The S8664-1010 silicon avalanche photodiode unveiled by Hamamatsu Corp. has a 10 × 10-mm active area and a spectral response range from 320 to 1000 nm, with peak sensitivity at 600 nm. Quantum efficiency at 600 nm is ∼85 percent, and gain is 50. The company says that the device exhibits high sensitivity in the visible spectrum, high gain, low noise and low capacitance. It comes in a ceramic package with an epoxy resin window and integrates easily into analytical instruments for low-light-level measurements.
