Presentations are invited for the workshop “Profitable Component Manufacturing in Europe,” which is organized by EPIC, the Paris-based European Photonics Industry Consortium. Representing part of the research agenda of the Photonics Technology Platform, the four-session event will be held during ECOC 2006 on Sept. 24 in Cannes, France.

Participants are asked to present their perspectives on such matters as the viability of performing R&D in Europe and of outsourcing fabrication to other countries. The benefits and disadvantages of operating foundries for materials, device processing or packaging in Europe are among other topics that will be addressed. Representatives from the industrial and academic communities involved in the design, manufacture and use of the components will be involved in the discussions.

Contributors will be asked to indicate their sessions of interest and to e-mail a title and abstract for a 10-minute presentation.
