Philips Lumileds Lighting Co. has announced the cool-white Luxeon K2, a 1-A LED with thin-film flip chip (TFFC) technology for improved light output, good optical performance and enhanced thermal capability. The RoHS-compliant lead-free device is designed, binned and tested for standard operation at 1000 mA and can be driven at 1500 mA. Packaged in rugged housing for operating in harsh environments, it delivers thermal resistance of 5.5 °C/W, operates at 185 °C and has flux bins of 160, 180 and 200 lm. At its rated drive current, it operates at only 66% of its maximum power rating. Applications include security, roadway, automotive and spot lighting. The use of surface-mount technology simplifies manufacture.
