An 8-kW disk laser that offers high electrical efficiency and high beam quality has been unveiled by Trumpf Inc. The TruDisk 8002 can process virtually any material, including the highly reflective copper and aluminum. It welds 10 mm deep in construction steel at a rate of 1 m per min. At 20 m per min, it can weld 3 mm deep. The cooling unit and beam switches are integrated into the compact device. Because the disk laser does not exhibit any thermal lens effect, the beam source is insensitive to adjustments. Applications include welding tasks in construction equipment, shipbuilding and automotive manufacturing.
