PHOTODETECTOR

An indium-phosphide single-photon-counting avalanche photodetector designed for peak responsivity at 1.06 μm has been unveiled by Princeton Lightwave Inc. Available in sizes of 80 and 200 μm, it enables low dark count rates for operation in either gated or nongated mode and provides an order-of-magnitude- larger detection efficiency than silicon does, according to the company. Packaged with a thermoelectric cooler inside a windowed TO-8 can, the device achieves detection efficiency of 50%. Applications include low-light YAG laser detection, and time-resolved spectroscopy in biomedical, lidar and ladar systems designed for remote sensing and for free-space optical transmission.
