OPTICAL FIBERS
OFS Specialty Photonics Div. has released optical fibers with hard clad silica coating, which can withstand high power and tight bends. The performance of three types of fibers was tested on a holmium:YAG laser at 2.1 μm while delivering up to 100 W and bent as tightly as 5 mm in diameter for a 365-μm-core fiber. The fibers tested were pure silica core/FI-doped clad/standard and optimized hard clad silica fiber coating with a 0.22 NA, and germanium-doped core/pure silica clad/optimized hard clad silica fiber coating with a 0.29 NA. The testing showed minimal difference in break diameter with or without power, suggesting that the fibers are suitable for multiple- and single-use high-power existing and emerging surgical procedures.
