DUAL-MODE FIBER

NTTphotonicsLabs_RIMG0089.jpgNTT Photonics Laboratories has introduced a dual-mode optical fiber that eliminates the need for expensive system upgrades by functioning as both multi- and single-mode fiber, featuring a low splicing and return loss connection. With conventional single-mode fiber, typical connection loss is 0.01 dB at 1.31 μm and 0.05 dB at 1.55 μm; return loss is >50 dB. With multimode fiber, typical connection loss is 0.02 dB at 850 nm, and return loss is >28 dB. Bending loss is 5-mm radius for simultaneous single- and multimode transmission. The optical fiber is tough and flexible and is supplied in a compact reel.
