A large-diameter fusion splicer has been unveiled by Furukawa America Inc. Jointly developed by the Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. and 3SAE Technologies Inc., the instrument splices up to 400-μm fiber. It builds upon the Fitel S177A handheld core alignment splicer and offers the same portability, speed and ease of operation, according to the company. Applications include high-power laser systems, medical devices and military defense systems.
