TERAHERTZ LASER
The Firefly-THz is a terahertz source that provides a wide tuning range, room-temperature operation, and high efficiency and brightness. Offered by
M Squared Lasers Ltd., the device is based on intracavity optical parametric oscillator technology developed at the University of St. Andrews in the UK. Suitable for spectroscopy, nondestructive testing, quality control, medical diagnostics, and detection of explosives, illegal drugs and bioagents, the device has an output power of >10 μW at 400 Hz, which the company says is about 10 times higher than other terahertz sources produce. Tunable from 1.2 to more than 3.0 THz, or <100 to 250 μm, the laser operates in the frequency rather than time domain, eliminating the requirement for postdetection Fourier transform data processing and averaging.
