A buck converter optimized for driving high-brightness, 350-mA LEDs at up to 94% efficiency has been released by Catalyst Semiconductor Inc. The CAT4201 incorporates a proprietary switching control algorithm for improved efficiency. Applications include automotive indicators and illumination lighting. The low power dissipation allows it to be housed in a small five-lead TSOT-23 package without a dedicated heat sink. It is compatible with 12- and 24-V systems and can handle transients up to 40 V. It also features single-pin control and dimming functions.
