A fully qualified ultrahigh-power uncooled multimode laser module for fiber laser pumping has been released by Bookham Inc. The single-emitter device delivers 8- to 10-W light output power at 940 to 960 nm from a multimode fiber with a 105-μm core diameter and a 0.15 or 0.22 numerical aperture. The MU8-940-01/04 includes a multimode laser diode chip with E2 front mirror passivation to prevent catastrophic optical damage to the laser diode facet. The RoHS-compliant modules are supplied in hermetically sealed three- and two-pin packages and are suitable for materials processing, printing and medical applications.
