IMAGE PROCESSING

Stemmer-Imaging_Screen.jpgTo boost speed in the latest version of its Common Vision Blox software library, Stemmer Imaging GmbH has offloaded parts of the image processing to the PC’s graphical processing unit (GPU). The graphics processor is clocked at rates 10 to 20 times faster than those of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), which, when combined with larger memory, can produce 500 times higher data throughput rates. The GPU has a 1.35-GHz core clock and 384-bit memory, compared with the FPGA’s 100-MHz and 100-bit. Onboard memory is >512 MB for the GPU and 256 MB for the FPGA. The company has added functions to the software library to integrate the GPU technology, including image filtering, point operations between two images, parallel processing of four monochrome images, flat-field correction, and rotation and scaling of images.
