Docter Optics GmbH is fabricating miniature light pipes from optical glass for use in LED applications, in laser-based systems and in the equipment used in solar power installations. The free-form lenses have a high slenderness ratio and a 2- to 3-mm diameter and are 8 to 10 mm long. The company also manufactures light pipes with lengths of up to 70 mm that can be used to modify the beam angle of LEDs, to concentrate solar radiation or to reshape a beam of light from, for example, rectangular to round. Contour tolerance is >4 μm peak to valley. The light pipes have plano, cylindrical, ellipsoid, parabolic or other boundaries and can be molded or ground and polished.
