Manufactured by DeltaNu Inc., the ReporteR is a palm-size Raman spectrometer used for rapid identification of illicit drugs, explosives, plastics and industrial chemicals. Weighing 11 oz and measuring 6 × 3 × 1.75 in., the instrument performs nondestructive testing and point-and-shoot sampling. The system comprises a 785-nm laser, a high-visibility LED display, a rechargeable battery that operates for more than 4 h and a USB interface for PC control. Operating temperature is from –20 to 40 °C. Real-time identification of an unknown plastic is made by comparing its molecular fingerprint with that of reference polymers stored in a spectral library, and it is done in <10 s.
