SURFACE STRUCTURE
Schott Solar GmbH has developed a surface structure for its solar cells to make them more efficient. ISO Texture allows the cells to convert more of the sunlight falling upon them into energy, increasing their power density and producing more clean electricity. Integrated into the company’s solar cell manufacturing process, the surface structure reduces by 5% the amount of silicon required per watt of energy produced in the module and increases output by 0.3% to 0.5%. The wet chemical process roughens the surface of a solar cell, reduces the reflection of impinging light particles onto the cell surface and expands the surface area of the cell by texturing small hills and gaps on it. The angular impact of the light particles results in less recombination of the charge carrier because of the shorter path to the
p-n junction and also results in more photons penetrating the material by angular reflection.
