Bayer MaterialScience LLC has added a new grade of material to its Makrolon product line. Makrolon LED2245 polycarbonate resin is designed for high-brightness LED applications. The company says that the material offers high light transmittance, low haze and improved thermal resistance, and that polycarbonate provides a high-performance and cost-effective alternative to glass and to PMMA. The Makrolon-based RXI (refraction/reflection/total internal reflection) collimator lens shown — made by Light Prescriptions Innovators LLC — has free-form surfaces with nonsymmetrical geometries, and it focuses the total LED light on its own. The material has a UL-94 flame rating of V-2.
