The Fitel S184 wide-area plasma fusion splicer manufactured by Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. incorporates 3SAE Technologies Inc.’s three-phase arc technology, which improves thermal stability and dynamic range and provides a controllable and repeatable heat zone. This heat source can be used in a postsplice annealing process that increases the tensile strength of the fusion splice. The flame polish removes internal stresses and surface imperfections in the silica that are created during the fusion process. The thermally expanded core splicing process can be used before or after splicing to lower optical loss of fibers with mismatched mode-field diameters.
