confocal scanning microscope: A microscope design that involves apertures inserted in conjugate plane positions inside the microscope, with one aperture in front of the illumination source and the other at the focal position in front of the detector. These apertures pass the light from only a very thin focal plane, increasing sensitivity along the Z-axis and producing high-contrast images. The spot illumination can be raster scanned to produce an image of the sample.
