contour projector

An inspection device in which the profile of a mechanical part is projected onto a ground-glass screen at a precisely known magnification so that the shape of the part can be compared with a scale drawing of the part provided by the designer. Thus several dimensions of a single part can be gauged simultaneously and compared with dimensional tolerances marked on the drawing. Because the part being projected often has considerable thickness, contour projectors are usually equipped with telecentric lenses that work at a low aperture such as f/10 or f/16.
