  • diamond cutting tool

A tool made by imbedding small particles of diamond in the working edge. In the optical field, the most commonly used diamond tools are glass saws, cup-shaped tools for curve generators, and diamond mills for forming prisms and flat glass plates. Diamond milling is much quicker than the older usage of iron tools with loose emery or carborundum as an abrasive; moreover, it leaves the glass so smooth as to be almost ready for polishing. Diamond tools do not make deep fissures as loose abrasives do.
