four-level laser

A solid-state laser consisting of active atoms or ions of a transition metal, rare-earth metal or actinide, imbedded in a crystal or glass material, often garnet. Excitation and transfer to different energy levels are similar to those of the three-level laser. However, there is a fourth, usually unoccupied level above ground level where the laser light terminates before spontaneous decay returns it to ground level.
