Fresnel reflection

The reflection of a portion of light resulting when light is incident upon the surface between materials that have different refractive indices. This Fresnel reflection depends upon the index difference and the angle of incidence. Such reflection occurs at the air-glass interfaces at entrance and exit ends of an optical waveguide. Resultant transmission losses (on the order of 4 percent per interface) can be virtually eliminated by the use of antireflection coatings or index-matching materials.
