infrared mapping

The process of mapping the infrared emittance of an area through the use of an infrared detector and related scanning instrumentation to produce thermal images that are then recorded on photographic film. If black and white film is used, the area's varying infrared intensities are recorded in shades of gray. With color film, false colors, such as the bright magenta produced by the high infrared emittance of vegetation, distinguish different intensities.
