meso form

A form of an element that cannot demonstrate optical activity as a result of dextrogyrate and levogyrate effects that are balanced contrary to each other in a structure. In essence, meso form elements contain chiral centers; however, due to a plane of symmetry, one half of the molecule is the mirror image of the other and thus any rotation to one side by one of the chiral centers is completely negated by an equal and opposite rotation of the polarized light by the other side of the chiral center resulting in the compound being optically inactive.
