  • optical bar-code reader

A device that reads and converts coded information from particular documents that are in the form of printed images and text into digital information that can be edited, transmitted, and then stored at the rate of hundreds of characters per second. Optical bar-code readers and scanners typically consist of a light source (typically an LED or laser source), a lens, and a light sensor to convert optical impulses to electrical signals. The electrical signals are then converted into digital numerical values usable by computers and other digital devices.
