piezo-optical transducer: A structure consisting of a thin film of liquid crystal sandwiched between light-polarizing filters that have received a surface lubricant. Depending on motion, the transducer acts as a highly sensitive detector by virtue of the sensitivity of the liquid crystal that is made to float by the lubricant between the plates. It produces a readily visible and colorful optical pattern that is dependent on the amount of disturbance.
