  • surface acoustic wave (SAW)

An acoustic wave that propagates along the surface of a solid and decays exponentially with substrate depth. Also called a Rayleigh wave, it has both longitudinal and transverse (shear) components. Acoustic surface waves demonstrate amplitude and elasticity.
