» Revisit the World's First Laser
On Sunday, May 4, 2008, CLEO/QELS organizers will present the "Theodore Maiman Tribute Symposium: Invention and Demonstration of the World's First Laser" from 3:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. The symposium describes the events leading to the first laser and its impact on modern society. The reception, sponsored by the OSA Foundation, will announce the establishment of the Theodore Maiman Student Paper Award, recognizing a student presenter at the conference for innovation and research excellence.
» Plasmonics Plenary
Plasmonics and nanophotonics get top billing at CLEO/QELS. According to CLEO/QELS plenary speaker Albert Polman of the FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam, what makes plasmonics so unique is that it has so many intriguing fundamental questions still open, and at the same time, so many possible applications relatively nearby. New research on plasmonics and nanophotonics – from the fundamental to the applied – are featured in this year's CLEO/QELS program.
