This year will mark the first annual Prism Awards for Photonics Innovation. These awards, presented by SPIE and Laurin Publishing, will recognize the best in innovative products and processes for the photonics industry worldwide. The Prism Award Ceremony/ Banquet will be held during SPIE Photonics West in the Regency Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. The evening begins with a reception at 6:30 pm, dinner will be served around 7 pm, and the award ceremony commences at 8:30 pm. » If you are visiting from outside the US

Beginning on January 12, 2009, the US is adding new visa requirements. Visa-waiver countries, most of which are in Europe, will be required to register online and be screened and authorized for entry. The new Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was ordered by the Department of Homeland Security to identify visitors who might be a threat. Authorization is valid for two years or until a current passport expires. The initial registration can take place any time before the first trip to the US after the system goes into effect.
