Lasers, Light Sources News
Idaho Earmarks Funds for Laser Isotope Project
Oct 1, 1997 — Idaho State University will receive $125,000 for a laser isotope separation project planned for either Idaho Falls or the university's campus in Pocatello. Project director Jay Kunze said he wanted the project in Idaho Falls because of its proximity to the National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and Mac Isotopes, a manufacturer of radioactive isotopes for industry, medicine and research. The funds are part of a $6 million settlement that Idaho Gov. Phil Batt reached with the US Navy...
Laserscope Receives Approval for Lung Cancer Treatment
Oct 1, 1997 — The US Food and Drug Administration granted premarket approval to Laserscope of San Jose, Calif., for use of its laser systems for photodynamic therapy, a cancer treatment that has shown promise in clinical trials. Photodynamic therapy involves...
Researchers Demonstrate High-Power, Aluminum-Free Mid-IR Laser
Oct 1, 1997 — Scientists at Northwestern University's Center for Quantum Devices in Evanston, Ill., have demonstrated an aluminum-free diode laser that emits up to 3 W at 3.2 µm. In comparison, similar aluminum-free diode lasers have a maximum output of 100...
Accudyne to Develop Laser-Based Glass Separation System
Sep 1, 1997 — The US Display Consortium has awarded a contract to develop a laser-based glass separation system to Accudyne Corp. of Palm Bay, Fla. The new technology is expected to provide improved speed, better accuracy and increased edge strength than current...
Princeton Develops Organic Laser
Sep 1, 1997 — Researchers at Princeton University in New Jersey have developed a laser from vacuum-deposited organic thin-film materials. Organic lasers have been eyed for years as a possible replacement for inorganic semiconductor diode lasers. Potential...
Silicon Glows With Iron 'Islands'
Sep 1, 1997 — GUILDFORD, UK -- Integrated optical devices are the ultimate application for a 1.54-µm light-emitting diode (LED) structure built in a conventional silicon diode junction. While compound semiconductor LEDs based on gallium arsenide abound, an...
Weapons of War:
Sep 1, 1997 — Military lasers have become the weapons that existed only in science fiction novels a generation ago. From blowing enemy missiles out of the sky to tracking enemy targets, the sheer numbers of laser weapons has prompted a new way of thinking within...
Cardiology:
Aug 1, 1997 — Keyhole" is the buzzword for lasers in cardiovascular surgery, as it is in many other surgical disciplines. Minimally invasive procedures are being cultivated to reduce the injury and healing time for patients, and reduce the cost for insurance...
Fiber Laser Sets a Record
Aug 1, 1997 — MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- A recent demonstration of optical fiber lasers with ultrahigh output powers could have implications for telecommunications, materials processing and medical applications, according to the scientists who developed the technology....
Laser 97 reflects photonics growth
Aug 1, 1997 — MUNICH, Germany -- Photonics has become a more developed industry, and its prospects for additional growth are excellent, said visitors to the Laser 97 trade show and conferences. The June trade fair attracted 14,500 visitors from 67 countries, a...
Laser Probe
Aug 1, 1997 — A joint effort among the US Department of Defense, ITT of Roanoke, Va., and Litton of Tempe, Ariz., resulted in the production of these night-vision goggles for the US Marines.
Lasers Allegedly Blind Pilots
Aug 1, 1997 — The US Federal Aviation Administration is investigating four reports of pilots being temporarily blinded by lasers while flying aircraft in the Los Angeles area. The last reported incident occurred when the pilot of a United Airlines Boeing 737 felt...
Ophthalmology:
Aug 1, 1997 — Lasers have worked in ophthalmology almost since the laser was invented in 1960. Granted, the techniques have changed and new procedures have evolved, but ophthalmological lasers remain among the most widely used of all surgical lasers. Global...
Single-Step QC Laser Emits at 8.5 µm
Aug 1, 1997 — In the latest development in quantum cascade laser research, a group of Northwestern University scientists reported an 8.5-µm emission from quantum cascade lasers grown in a single step by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy. In addition, the...
US Cracks Down on Laser, Chemical Exports Used in Weapons Manufacture
Aug 1, 1997 — The US Department of Commerce has expanded its crackdown on exports beyond nuclear weapons technology to encompass materials for making chemical weapons, including uranium and lasers. Undersecretary William Reinsch said the department has begun...
American Blue Diode Laser Pulses Atop Silicon Carbide Substrate
Jul 1, 1997 — DURHAM, N.C. -- Cree Research Inc. has demonstrated a pulsed blue semiconductor diode laser that operates at room temperature -- a first step in a race for a commercial device that would greatly increase optical storage capacity. The company's 403-nm...
CLEO Attendance Falls
Jul 1, 1997 — CLEO '97 (Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics) held in Baltimore failed to attract as many attendees as it did last year. There were 6644 total attendees this year compared with 6936 for the previous conference in Anaheim, Calif. Of all...
Giant Robots Build Airplanes with the Aid of Laser Tracking
Jul 1, 1997 — Juggling takes skill and focus. Imagine, then, juggling sections of airplanes that weigh 100,000 lb and that must be matched to within thousandths of an inch. That was the situation Ed Chalupa and two fellow engineers faced when in 1993 they formed...
Laser Ultrasonics Drive the Nondestructive Testing Market
Jul 1, 1997 — Laser-based systems will drive ultrasonic testing to the forefront of the nondestructive testing (NDT) market, says an analysis of the US NDT market released by Maxtech International. The systems are designed to test composite aircraft sections and...
Sales Double for Laser, Electro-Optics Companies
Jul 1, 1997 — Total sales have nearly doubled in the last five years for 19 leading companies in the laser and electro-optics industry, according to a report compiled by the Laser and Electro-Optics Manufacturers' Association (LEOMA). In 1992, sales for the 19...
