Bioengineering Gets a Boost

Charles T. Troy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A $986,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation will boost the biomedical engineering program at the University of Rochester.
The grant will help fund a teaching laboratory and three new faculty members to the schools of engineering and medicine.
Richard Waugh, professor of mechanical engineering, biophysics, pharmacology and physiology, and director of graduate studies in the new program, said the program will bring together faculty members from Rochester's medical school and all four of its engineering departments, including optics.
The grant will provide half of the program's $100,000 annual budget for three years plus support the three additional faculty positions.
