Kopin Nabs $16M Display Modules Order

Kopin Corp., a manufacturer of display systems for mobile consumer and military applications, has announced receipt of a $16 million follow-on production order of display modules for the US Army’s Thermal Weapon Sight (TWS) program. The order, to be fulfilled over a 15-month period beginning in September, supports continued production of the company’s high-performance 640M display module for the Light, Medium and Heavy Thermal Weapon Sights (LTWS, MTWS, HTWS).

“The reliability of our display module has been proven in the substantial volume of thermal weapon sights deployed over the past few years, which is a result of our extensive testing, including shock and thermal cycling. This order, combined with the $27 million TWS eyepiece order from another key customer we announced in April, further strengthens our military business,” said president and CEO John C.C. Fan.

Kopin’s 640M display module consists of the CyberDisplay 640M LCD microdisplay, backlight and control electronics packaged in a sealed housing to prevent foreign particles. The display, with 640 × 480 (VGA) monochrome pixels in a compact 0.38-in. diagonal size, is manufactured at the display manufacturing center in Westborough, and it is integrated and tested at the assembly and manufacturing facility in Taunton.

The assembly facility was commissioned in April 2008 and is dedicated to the integration, testing and delivery of high-level display systems for US Department of Defense applications, said Kopin. Housed in a Class 10 cleanroom for minimizing the generation of foreign particles, it has capabilities in environmental stress screening, shock and vibration.
